New vehicle sales across Australia totalled 122,509 units in June 2025, marking a 2.4% increase over the same month in 2024.
According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), this brings the year-to-date total to 608,811 new vehicles, demonstrating the strength and resilience of the automotive sector in spite of ongoing economic pressures.
FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says the result shows the continued popularity of dual-cab utes and the diversity of choice in the Australian market.
“Australia remains one of the most open and competitive markets in the world, where consumers have a wide range of choice across all market segments,” Weber says.
The dominance of light commercial vehicles (25.3% of the total market) was underscored by sales of the top four Utes in June: Ford Ranger (6293), Toyota Hilux (6195), Isuzu D-Max (3119) and BYD Shark 6 (2993).
“In a market of more than 400 models, the top four Utes made up 15.2% of all sales during June. The rest of the top 10 was made up of SUVs and, when combined, models in the top 10 made up 27.2% of all sales,” Weber says.
Passenger cars sales (hatchbacks and sedans) were down 27.9% year-on-year to 15,190 units in June, now representing 12.4% cent of the total market.
The proportion of electric vehicle sales, while stronger in June, year to date made up 7.7% of total sales from all sources, compared with 8% in 2024 and 7.4% in 2023.
Toyota was the market leader with sales of 20,225 during June, followed by Ford (10,103), Mazda (9405), Hyundai (8407) and BYD (8156).
Sales in the Australian Capital Territory were down 9.1% on June 2024 to 1,687; New South Wales was up 1.8% (36,887); Northern Territory decreased by 1.1% (1017); Queensland rose 5.1% (27,592); South Australia fell 0.9% (7,862); Tasmania decreased 4% (1,822); Victoria was up 1.2% (32,747) and Western Australia rose 6.8% (12,895).
