US restrictions could boost EV sales in Australia

BYD is expected to expand its offerings and dealerships in Australia as US president-elect Donald Trump aims to block Chinese brands selling cars to Americans.

US president Joe Biden has quadrupled tariffs on Chinese-made EVs to 100% while Trump indicates he could increase these to 200%.

So says The Sydney Morning Herald, adding Trump’s move could make it near impossible for Chinese EV brands to expand in the US with the Chinese brands expected to target other markets.

BYD Australian importer EVDirect says US restrictions could be a silver lining for Australians shopping for a new EV.

The Sydney Morning Herald says BYD is second to Tesla in Australian new EV sales and could become one of Australia’s top five automotive brands under its expansion plans in 2025.

BYD expects great things of its newly launched Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute and in February next year it also intends launching the Sealion 7 electric SUV in Australia.
