In another case of winning huge amounts of free publicity for an already-expensive Superbowl advertisement, VW appears to have played the game very well with this year’s effort.
The company gained incredible success in the past with its kid Darth Vader and fat dog/Star Wars parody efforts.
This time around, there has been controversy over the ad for the new VW Beetle, which sees a white man with a Jamaican accent and happy outlook attempting to cheer up co-workers.
“Don’t fret man, the sticky bun come soon” has to be one of my favourite lines from an advert in some time.
Jamaica does not seem too upset.
Their tourism minister has told media the advertisement has the potential to increase tourism to the island.
“I think this is a very creative commercial which truly taps into the tremendous appeal that brand Jamaica and its hospitable people have globally.”
The video followed a teaser bringing together ‘unhappy’ people from well known Youtube videos and reggae legend Jimmy Cliff.
