Robert Barry · 2 comments

In spite of global supply chains not yet fully stabilised from the impacts of the pandemic, Australia recorded 85,340 new vehicle sales in February 2021, a 1.6% increase on February 2021 figures.

The Toyota Hilux remained Australia’s best-selling new vehicle with 4803 units sold in February 2022.

In second place was the Toyota RAV4 SUV with 4454 units sold. Mitsubishi’s Triton was in third place with 3,811 sold. The Ford Ranger took out fourth place with 3,455 vehicles sold. Toyota’s Prado was in fifth place with 2,778 sold.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive Tony Weber says the news was positive.

“Global supply chains for microprocessor units are still some distance from full recovery, so we are pleased to see this small increase on 2021 figures,” Weber says

“The consumer demand for new cars in Australia remains strong and manufacturers are continuing to work hard to get cars into the hands of motorists,” he says.

Sales in the Australian Capital Territory were down 2.6% compared with the same period in 2021, with 1356 vehicles sold. New South Wales sales were down 3.5% with 26,360 sold. Northern Territory sales decreased by 5.6% with 705 vehicles sold.

Queensland sales were up 3.8% with 18,962 vehicles sold. South Australian sales increased by 8.9% with 5810 vehicles sold. Tasmanian sales increased by 16.6% with 1561 vehicles sold. Victorian sales increased by 5.5% with 22,177 vehicles sold.

Sales in Western Australia were down 1.7% with 8409 vehicles sold.

Toyota was the market leader in February 2022 with 20,886 vehicles sold. It was followed by Mazda with 8782, Mitsubishi with 7813, Kia with 5881 and Hyundai came in fifth place with 5649.

The February 2022 market of 85,340 new vehicle sales is an increase of 1363 vehicle sales or 1.6% against February 2021 (83,977) vehicle sales.

Both February 2022 and February 2021 had 24 selling days, and this resulted in an increase of 56.8 vehicle sales per day.

The Passenger Vehicle Market is down by 3509 vehicle sales (-18.3%) over the same month last year; the Sports Utility Market is up by 2284 vehicle sales
(5.4%); the Light Commercial Market is up by 2383 vehicle sales (12.3%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market is up by 205 vehicle sales (7.3%) versus
February 2021.

Toyota led Mazda with a margin of 12,204 vehicle sales and 14.2 market share points.

It constantly amuses me that you guys in the media write about VFACTS figures as if they show how the market was going in that month – which assumes cars were sold and delivered same month.. but the reality is that cars being registered and delivered each month these days are largely cars that were sold/ordered 3, 6, 9, 12 or more months ago… so VFACTS figures are telling you how many cars were sold way back then, not how many were sold last month!

      Hi Wayne,

Yup that’s a very astute observation – I think we will change the terminology from “sold” to “registered” because you are quite right, most of the vehicles were ordered so time ago. And Australia is not the only market in this situation.

      Best regards,

      Robert.
