Orders have opened for the Tesla Model Y SUV in Australia, with deliveries expected from August for the basic Rear-Wheel Drive variant costing from $68,900.
The higher spec Performance is due from about November for $98,599.
Both models will only have five seats here, the seven-seater not included – at least yet.
The single motor Rear-Wheel Drive is expected to have about 455km range from its 62.3kWh battery, while the Performance will have about 514km range from its 82.8kWh battery, having top speeds of 217km/h and 250km/h (electronically limited) respectively.
A panoramic glass roof, heated seats, the standard Tesla Autopilot driver assist package and four USB ports are standard.
The Model Y versions coming to Australia and New Zealand are made at Giga Shangahai which is expected to increase production due to the high demand in right-hand drive markets.
The strong interest in the Model Y RHD markets like Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom surprised Tesla chief executive Elon Musk.
He tweeted on June 13 that Tesla is working on accelerating Model Y production for the RHD market.
“Didn’t expect demand to be so high!”
Tesla hasn’t provided order numbers but Australia has the Model Y in Tesla showrooms for test drives and display with huge interest apparent.
Whether a Long Range variant is coming has yet to be determined.
The Tesla Model Y can be pre-ordered in Australia.
