Electrics are up in most categories in the January new vehicle sales figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

About 620 sales were recorded for electrics across passenger and SUV (500 electrics in that alone) sectors for the month – up 109.5% on January 2021 when just 296 were recorded (which included five light commercials in January last year but none this time).
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were also up 94.3% in the January comparisons, recording 307 sales last month as against 158 in January 2021.
It’s interesting to see sales of new petrol vehicles have dropped across nearly all categories with overall sales down 12.8% (from 47,693 in January 2021 to 41,592 last month).
Hybrid and diesel sales have remained fairly flat too.
FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says the microprocessor shortage and the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on supply chains continues into 2022, impacting markets world-wide.
However, he says consumer interest, enquiry, and demand for new cars in Australia remains strong.
Weber says the FCAI will continue working with all parties to resolve any bottlenecks in processing vehicles at some Australian ports.
