Tesla Model 3 and S recalls

An Australian recall affects 7055 2017-2020 Tesla Model 3 and 2014-2020 Tesla Model S EVs for two separate faults.

In its recall notice for the Model 3, the Australian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications says the issue affecting 5143 units of all Tesla Model 3 variants from 2017-2020 is “due to the routing of the rear-view camera cable through the trunk lid”.

The notice says if the cable becomes damaged through repeated trunk lid opening it will result in the rear-view camera not displaying on the car’s centre console.

That could result in an accident causing injury or death while the driver is reversing, the notice adds.

It suggests drivers do additional checks of their surroundings when reversing.

On the Tesla Model S fault, the department says 1912 units may be affected by that recall.

“Due to a manufacturing issue the secondary bonnet latch may be located in the incorrect position, this could prevent the secondary latch from engaging as designed,” it explains.

“If the primary latch is released and the secondary latch is not engaged the bonnet may open without warning. This increases the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Australian Tesla owners affected by the two recalls will be advised when parts become available and can then schedule an appointment with Tesla Service.

The recalls are similar to measures taken for the Tesla models in some other overseas markets.
