BYD recalls 32,000 Shark 6 utes over spare-wheel fault

Autotalk · 0 comments

BYD Australia is recalling just over 32,000 Shark 6 vehicles because a worn support cable could fail and allow the spare wheel to detach while driving.

The recall covers vehicles produced between August 29, 2024, and June 15, 2026.

BYD says incorrect spare-wheel installation, improper positioning of the wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear to the support cable.

Continued movement and friction could eventually cause the cable to fail, allowing the wheel to fall from the vehicle and create a risk of serious injury or death for other road users.

Owners who continue driving before repairs are completed are being advised to remove the spare wheel by following instructions in the Shark 6 handbook.

The recall includes:

  • 28,543 Shark 6 Premium utes produced between August 29, 2024, and June 12, 2026.
  • 2100 Shark 6 Performance models built between January 27 and June 15, 2026.
  • 1366 Shark 6 Dynamic cab-chassis vehicles produced between September 26, 2025, and April 15, 2026.

Affected vehicles will receive an updated spare-wheel lifter assembly free of charge.

BYD estimates the repair will take about 30 minutes, although vehicles may need to remain with dealers longer depending on workshop schedules.

The company will contact affected owners by email, while customers using the BYD app may also receive a notification.

Owners can contact their preferred BYD dealer or the company’s Australian customer care centre with their 17-digit vehicle identification number.

BYD says no other models in Australia are included in the recall.
