Used vehicle sales across Australia rebounded in May 2025, with a 5.4% increase to 192,692 units sold, according to the latest Automotive Insights Report (AIR), produced by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) in partnership with AutoGrab. The report also noted a 5.2% increase in listings, reflecting a steady balance between supply and demand in the used car market.AADA chief executive James Voortman says the uplift in listings could be linked to end-of-financial-year incentives in the new car market.“The observed increase in listings may be partly attributed to end-of-year discounts being offered in the new car market, prompting more people to upgrade their vehicles and boosting the supply of used cars,” Voortman says.SUVs led the sales momentum, with the segment posting a 7.9% monthly increase to 83,442 units sold in May.Voortman also pointed to improved vehicle turnover: “Average days to sell dropped to 47.6 days, the lowest this year, suggesting improved stock turnover.”Used car sales rose across all states except the Northern Territory, which recorded a 12.4% decline to 648 units.Used electric vehicle (EV) sales recorded a sharp uptick of 37.5% in May – a notable rise from 8.4% in April – indicating stronger consumer demand for cleaner transport options. In value retention, small passenger cars continued to outperform, with the Audi RS3 taking the top spot in the 2–4 year-old category at 105.8%, replacing the Ford Mustang.
The Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA), in partnership with AutoGrab, has released the 2024 Year That Was Automotive Insights Report (AIR), providing an in-depth analysis of the nation’s used car market.
Following months of oversupply, the Australian used car market saw a 3.8% drop in December 2024 to 322,532 listings. The Automotive Industry Report (AIR), compiled monthly by AutoGrab and the Australian Automotive Dealers Association (AADA), said the December market favoured buyers. Sales declined significantly, by 8.1%, to 181,724 units.
The November 2024 edition of the Automotive Insight Report (AIR) compiled by the Australian Automotive Dealers Association and AutoGrab indicates ongoing cooling demand for used cars in the Australian market. Sales declined 2.3% to 197,652 compared to last month.
The July edition of the Automotive Insight Report (AIR) indicates that the market for used cars is tightening, with rising sales and falling listings leading to a reduced gap between demand and supply.
The June edition of the Automotive Insights Report (AIR) shows a growing oversupply of used cars in Australia as the gap widens between vehicles listed for sale and vehicles sold at the end of the financial year.
The May edition of the Automotive Insights Report (AIR) shows the number of used cars for sale in Australia continuing to grow, putting downward pressure on prices, which in turn is leading to an uptick in sales.
The Automotive Insights Report data for April shows the market for used cars in Australia is stabilising with a steady decline in supply and demand holding firm.
