Australia to lead global launch of electric MG U9 ute

Autotalk · 0 comments

Australia will become the first market to launch MG’s new U9 electric ute, offering 430km of WLTP range and a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity.

The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model produces 325kW and 700Nm from a 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate battery.

MG claims the full-size ute can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds.

Designed and tested for Australia, the U9 has a 685kg payload and a tray capable of carrying a standard pallet. It also provides a 236-litre front storage compartment.

MG Motor Australia marketing director Dimitri Andreatidis says the vehicle was developed around the way Australians use their utes.

“The MGU9 EV brings together the capability and utility people expect from a ute with the comfort and benefits of an electric powertrain,” Andreatidis says.

“It’s designed to be used every day, whether that’s for work during the week, the school run or getting away on the weekend.”

The U9 supports DC charging at up to 115kW, with a 20% to 80% recharge taking approximately 42 minutes. Its onboard AC charger operates at up to 11kW.

Vehicle-to-load capability provides up to 6.6kW through the external CCS2 port, allowing the ute to power tools and other equipment. Three 2.2kW outlets are also fitted inside the cabin.

The vehicle uses four-wheel electronic air suspension and has a 750kg unbraked towing capacity.

Interior equipment includes two 12.3-inch displays, leather front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger and an eight-speaker JBL audio system.

The driver’s seat is heated, ventilated and fitted with a massage function, while the front passenger seat and steering wheel are also heated.

Other features include a powered hands-free tailgate and a 360-degree camera system.

The U9 has received a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

MG Motor Australia has yet to announce local pricing and detailed launch timing.
