Trump threat forces Daimler to halt Iran expansion

United States president Donald Trump’s threat to penalise those that do business with Iran has put a halt on Daimler AG’s operations in the country.

The German carmaker told Bloomberg it has suspended its “limited” activities in Iran, which included the possibility of selling and producing trucks with Iran Khodro Co, following Trump’s threat and associated sanctions.

“Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States,” Trump tweeted earlier this week.

Daimler had previously sold up to 10,000 vehicles annually in Iran before it pulled out of the country in 2010, although it hadn’t resumed sale or production of cars or trucks before it announced its latest decision.

“We will continue to closely monitor the political developments, especially in connection with the future of the nuclear agreement,” Daimler says.

French carmakers Renault SA and PSA Group, have also reportedly pulled back from doing business in Iran.
