As Mercedes-Benz and Holden are retreating from the one-tonne pickup market, Peugeot has decided it wants a slice of the more than 2.4 million units sold globally.
The French manufacturer has unveiled pictures of its new Landtrek single and double cab Utes which will be built in China from the end of 2020, initially for export to markets in the sub-Sahara and Latin America.
The company says it may be deployed in other markets but Europe is not included in the scope of the marketing for LandTrek.
Mirroring other one-tonne Utes, the Landtrek will be offered in single cab and double cab configurations, with 4×2 or on demand 4×4 drivetrains.
Customers will have the choice of a 112kW/350Nm 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 157kW/320Nm 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with the choice of a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The Landtrek will offer 3.5 tonne towing capacity. Double cab models can fit two Euro-sized pallets in the cargo box, and single cab models can fit up to three Euro-sized pallets in the cargo box.
Hill descent control, ASR, trailer swing control, a 360 degree camera, and lane departure warning are part of the Landtrek’s arsenal of safety features but there is no mention of Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) which would be needed for markets such as Australia and New Zealand.
